Lomopedia: Canon Canonet GIII QL 17

2

The name may be quite a mouthful but this little camera has a lot to say. Canon finished strong with this last and latest edition in their compact rangefinder line. The Canon Canonet GIII Q17 can be considered an icon in the arena of compact rangefinders (with built-in light meters) with reported sales amounting to 1.2 million units sold from 1972 until 1982.

What made the GIII a bestseller? It’s actually a mix of things — starting with the compact and sleek design. The GIII was an inspired piece of camera gear. It had nice aesthetics, ergonomic feel, substantial weight, and a slew of features that were intended to create brilliant photographs with every click of the shutter. Some would even go as far as to liken the GIII to a Leica rangefinder.

Sporting a 40 mm 6-element f/1.7 fixed lens, the GIII was capable of shooting high-quality photos with fine details and distinctive sharpness. The rangefinder focusing system made easy work of quick and on-the-go focusing for candid photos and street snaps.

The Canonet GIII QL17 came in chrome and all-black editions, the chrome being the more common between the two. Different finishes, same iconic heritage.
